From the Owner, Karen Piovaty

I fell in love with the Oxtongue Craft Cabin & Gallery the first time I drove in the driveway. I always dreamed of owning a gallery but wasn’t actively looking for one when this irresistible opportunity presented itself on a trip to Lake of Bays in 2012. A native of Paris, Ontario, I had been to cottage country just once as a teenager so this was quite a change from life in the “deep south!”

My life has been very arts-centric thanks to my Prague-born mother who took me to galleries, ballets and the theatre from a very young age. I hold a BFA from the University of Arizona and majored in graphic design which was my career until purchasing the gallery. I’m very proud to own this beloved Muskoka tradition and to represent Canadian artists and artisans from across our amazing country.

Our History: A Canadian Original

Oxtongue Craft Cabin & Gallery had a humble start in 1979 when artists Geraldine Slater and John McConnell hung their artwork on the fence of their summer log cabin in Dwight, Lake of Bays. Over the years, the gallery has represented some of Canada’s most gifted craftspeople and artists. I invite you to visit and see for yourself why our neck of the woods is a Muskoka tradition.

Gallery Expansion

The gallery expanded in 2016 to showcase larger, original artworks including oil, watercolour, encaustic, acrylic and mixed media paintings and select sculptural pieces. A new granite staircase, with stones sourced from a pit just west of Dwight, takes customers through the glorious gardens at the edge of our creek and into the new gallery space.
