SUMMARY:In the Back 40: Ann Shier & Sue Tupy
DESCRIPTION:Encaustic painter Ann Shier of Toronto and acrylic painter Sue Tupy of Thornbury find endless inspiration in Ontario’s remote wilderness. “In the Back 40” showcases paintings inspired by the wetlands\, forests\, lakes and rocky Canadian Shield they have encountered off the beaten path. \nThe opening reception is Saturday\, July 27\, 1-4pm. Both artists will be here to talk about their inspiration and process. \nThe term “The Back 40” refers to the historical allocation of farmland and the back part of a farm. In the U.S. Homestead Acts (1860s–)\, farmers were granted a quarter section; a section was 640 acres\, a quarter section was 160 acres\, and the quarter section was itself subdivided into four quarter-quarter sections of 40 acres each: two front forty and two back forty. \nThe short-lived Canadian Homestead Act (1872-1918) had a similar 40-acre unit allocation and was modelled after the U.S. Homestead Act. It hoped to encourage settlement in Canada’s prairie provinces. You can read more here.

SUMMARY:Rural Roots by Janine Marson
DESCRIPTION:Artist Janine Marson celebrates her Oxtongue roots with 50 new oil paintings created in the area surrounding her childhood home on Oxtongue Lake. We are thrilled to premiere this solo show in our Lower Gallery from Saturday\, June 29 through Sunday\, July 13. Opening reception is Saturday\, June 29 from 1-4pm. \nJanine Marson’s Oxtongue Lake roots are very strong and impact everything she does in art and life. Janine was fortunate to grow up at her family’s Timber Trail Resort along the banks of the Oxtongue River at the doorstep to Algonquin Park. It was here that she met and watched Group of Seven artist A.J. Casson paint in her backyard and decided to be a painter when she grew up! \nAs a child she listened\, observed and allowed her senses to take in the surrounding beauty. It is from this vantage point that her kindred art spirit developed and blossomed. The effects of colour and light are the driving force in her work. \nJanine says it’s the simple things in life that can help us feel a sense of connection and draw us closer together.
