Don MacKenzie is a self-taught artist who is inspired by the natural environment of northern Ontario. Don is an avid outdoorsman who painstakingly recreates the birds, butterflies and foliage he sees in the wilderness. Each piece is remarkable in its precise detail.
Don sculpts his pieces from basswood and paints them with acrylic washes. Basswood is an ideal wood for many woodcarvers. Its soft, fine and even texture makes it easy to work with and its pale, inconspicuous color doesn’t detract from the carved patterns of the finished piece.
Don sets his birds in their native habitat so viewers also get a glimpse of nature.
