At first glance, the depth and playful light in Diane Stewart’s pieces are impressive. On closer inspection, impressive gives way to sheer amazement when you discover that each ‘painting’ is composed of thousands of pieces of individually, hand-cut pieces of fabric. Diane has been perfecting her unique technique for over 30 years.
Diane’s compositions are created by the careful juxtaposition of pieces of patterned cotton, traditionally used for quilting. She also uses lace and tulle to create the translucent quality of water, waterfalls and rays of sun. Diane judiciously machine stitches on some pieces to add extra texture and depth.
